JAMEIKA PORCH
Four-year-old Jameika Porch vanished in the early morning hours on August 14, 1994.
Jameika had been staying with her grandmother, Annie Tatum, on Tunnel Boulevard. Her grandmother wasn't initially concerned, she assumed her daughter, Jameika's mother, had picked up the girl. Several hours passed before Jameika's mom arrived to get her daughter and they realized the little girl was missing. As a result, investigators say the crime scene was compromised. |
When the girl vanished, she had been sharing a bed with an 8-year-old cousin. The cousin didn't notice anything amiss. An aunt sleeping in an upstairs bedroom said she heard steps on the stairs around 5 o'clock in the morning.
Annie Tatum said she found a Plexiglass windowpane in a door to the house had been removed but that wasn't unusual. because family members often removed the pane to unlock the door. The pane was put back in place before Jameika was discovered missing.
The missing person case was featured nationally on "America's Most Wanted" and "Unsolved Mysteries."
More than five years later, in October of 1999, workers trimming trees found skeletal remains of a small child at Riverside Industrial Park off Amnicola Highway. The following year, the remains were positively identified as belonging to Jameika Porch. She had been strangled to death with a ligature. Based on the decomposition of her remains, a forensic anthropologist determined she was killed shortly after she disappeared.
